Black and White: Reckoning with Racism and Reconciliation

Imagine that we could find a common and expansive ground that allows us to acknowledge the pain caused by systemic racism and the rise of white supremacy groups. Imagine that we could speak the truth of our anger, grief, fear, guilt, hope, and despair.

Imagine we can grow to a greater clarity of our own role.

The dream is to help create a model, based on concepts of truth and reconciliation, to contribute to unraveling racism in our country, as in South Africa.

The goal is to crack America’s amnesia and illuminate our experience while avoiding the pitfalls of re-traumatizing people.

Three workshops and two follow-ups have already taken place with an equal number of Black and White people willing to explore the deep strain of racism in the United States and develop ways to address it. Members of previous workshops have conducted research, formed groups of their own, developed materials on racism for children, and developed and led marches.
